Magellan RoadMate 1470 Makes a Dandy First Impression on the Road
Even though its been sitting on my table for a couple of weeks, life has conspired to keep me from trying out the Magellan RoadMate 1470 until today. And I put it to a good test — straight out of the box, no preplanning a route — on a trip to a city a little more than 100 miles north of where I live, to a specific destination I have never been to before. To say the least, the pressure was on this little gizmo.
Apple 3GS: GPS, Wi-Fi, and Cell Positioning; Digital Compass and a TomTom App on the Way
It’s been a big day for Apple fan boys and girls — the annual Apple World Wide Developer Conference is underway; it’s like Christmas for hipsters. Anyway, Apple has unveiled the third generation iPhone, the 3GS, along with some aggressive pricing for it and previous models — the iPhone 3G drops to $99 for the 8 GB version — and even more location-based services (LBS) capabilities. In addition to assisted-GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular-based location determination, the iPhone 3GS has a built in magnetometer and digital compass.
TomTom Brings the Bling with White Pearl
I saved this one for Friday, ‘cuz it’s usually a slow day … and I was right. Not sure what to think about this one. Euro portable navigation device (PND) giant TomTom this week rolled out the White Pearl, a Paris Hiltonesqe version of its One IQ Routes gadget. According to the company this is a “special edition navigation product with a twist! The White Pearl’s stylish, pearlescent design makes the perfect gift, as well as appealing to the driver who likes a touch of glamor in their car.
LG GT505 Ships with a Wisepilot Onboard
LG has begun shipping its latest GPS-enabled smartphone in Europe, the GT505, which features a 3-inch touch screen, navigation, and a bunch of other location-based services. The phone’s Wisepilot navigation service will initially be offered in more than 40 countries across Europe; the Wisepilot for LG will be pre-loaded on all GT505 phones and users will get a 30-day free trial.
