D’oh! Colorado Springs ‘Cachers Flee Campus Cop, Bomb Squad Blows Up ‘Cache
This is a D’oh File of a different stripe: the first one (here) involving geocaching. It seems some ‘cachers were hiding a cache in Colorado Springs, Colo. outside Pikes Peak Community College’s Rampart Range campus when they were spied by a campus police officer. Rather than rationally stopping to talk with the office and explain what they were up to, our would-be ‘cachers jumped in their car and sped off. You can guess what happened next: blocked off streets, and local police bomb squad called in to destroy the now suspicious package.
D’oh! Blind Faith in Sat-Nav Causes a British Man to Nearly Drive Off 100-foot Cliff
Yet another one for the D’oh files from the United Kingdom. It’s not like every story of someone slavishly following their sat nav to death and ruin comes from there, but it does seem like an inordinate amount do, as I’ve noted before. I’m not sure if it’s because of the popularity of GPS devices there or something to do with the British psyche or what. Anyway, this incident didn’t involve death or ruin, but it did cost a British man more than $3,000 after he almost drove his car off a cliff, having put his complete faith in his TomTom.
D’oh! Entering Wrong GPS Coordinates Causes Pleasure Boat to Slam Into Breakwall
This latest item for the D’oh! Files (think X-Files, only with less creepiness but more stupidity — ‘cept for maybe the last couple of seasons) comes from my favorite city in my home state: Cleveland, Ohio. In case you’re new to the maniacal nature of GPS Maniac, I sometimes post news about people who put too much faith in GPS technology; these items get placed in the D’oh! Files. In this instance, it wasn’t the accuracy of GPS or directions from a sat nav that was trusted too much, but rather operator error. If you’re going to run around with your boat on autopilot, um, you might want to double check and make you ENTER THE COORDINATES CORRECTLY.
D’oh! GPS Nabs Another Crook
Ah, this is becoming a classic for the D’oh! Files: crook steals a phone, and subsequently gets nabbed by police because he was using said phone. This latest example of crime not paying comes to us from the local ABC affiliate in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. Seems the Buckley family home in Apex, a town outside Raleigh, was burgled, and the thief took a mobile phone, along with other electronics, including a Nintendo Wii, as well as some jewelry.
