More GPS-Enabled Androids: Moto Cliqs and Blurs Along, While LG Also Gets in the Act
Rumors, whispers, and speculation about Android-based Motorola handsets have been rippling through the gizmo blogosphere for a few months now, and Moto made it official last week, unveiling the Cliq and the Dext, while pushing its new Motoblur software. Meanwhile, this week LG made its first Android-based phone official with the announcement of the LG-GW620. Perhaps the most notable thing about all this is not that they are Android phones, and certainly not that they are GPS-enabled — that’s getting to be old hat in the smartphone market — but rather, how both companies are touting their respective phones’ abilities to interface with various social networking apps and websites. That, and the fact that Europe will soon have not one but two Android handset options.
Your Friendly Neighborhood GPS Maniac Catches up on the LG Chocolate, Nuvifone, and Mio Moov
Duties over at one of the Maniac’s sister publications — helping shepherd a server migration, new content management system, etc. — have kept me busy as of late, as I’ve mentioned previously. Not to mention the fact that I’ve been trying to dodge the rain to test out a new GPS gadget (which I’ll get to later in another post). So I’ve spent this afternoon pouring over what I missed while I was otherwise occupied, and now have keyboard in hand to hit the highlights: a forthcoming whiz-bang smartphone from LG, Garmin’s Nuvifone finally launches, and new units from Mitac’s Mio four our European friends.
LG GT505 Ships with a Wisepilot Onboard
LG has begun shipping its latest GPS-enabled smartphone in Europe, the GT505, which features a 3-inch touch screen, navigation, and a bunch of other location-based services. The phone’s Wisepilot navigation service will initially be offered in more than 40 countries across Europe; the Wisepilot for LG will be pre-loaded on all GT505 phones and users will get a 30-day free trial.
