Magellan Makes it Official: iPhone App Available Now, Related GPS Car Kit on the Way
Here’s an interesting thing: while Garmin is pushing its Nuvifone, rival Magellan has just announced a navigation app for the iPhone, along with a forthcoming car kit. The RoadMate app with turn-by-turn navigation and spoken street names is available now for a cool $79.99; the vehicle mounting cradle — which includes its own GPS reciever — for the iPhone and iPod touch will be available in December for $129.99, Magellan says. The car kit cradle also features its own speaker and Bluetooth.
Magellan Unveils Updated VantagePoint Software, Triton Firmware Upgrades
And there was much rejoicing. Magellan announced today that it has released a new version of its VantagePoint software, the program its Triton handheld owners use to manage their devices. The company also says that it is offering a number of enhancements to said Triton units via VantagePoint. Among the improvements are better North American basemaps with “more roads, more detailed locations, and better map displays,” Magellan says.
Magellan Rolls Out its Latest Maestro
Magellan made the Maestro 4700 official this week, unveiling the new model in its high-end line of portable navigation devices (PND). But what caught my eye is the price; Magellan kept the suggested retail price for its new flagship model at $300.

I’ve taken it along to places I go frequently, playing around with options such as “mostly freeways” and “fastest time” in order to see how its routing compared to what I already new to be the shortest or fastest route. I’ve also taken it along to places I’ve never been before, to see if it could indeed get me where I needed to go with the purported ease promised by its maker. I’m happy to report that the new 1470 lives up to its advanced billing.
