An Android-Based Mio On the Way? Don’t Believe Everything You Read on the Vast Series of Tubes
“But it must be true; I read it on the Internet.” Make no mistake, for those of us who remember the pre-Internet days of journalism, this kind of thing provides no end of amusement. For the past week or so, the gadget sector of the blogosphere has been awash with stories about Mio producing an Android-based mobile Internet navigation device dubbed MiBuddy. Android, of course, is a kind of a big deal right now, and the fact that Mio would produce a device built around it when all of its previous PNDs have been built around Windows CE would only serve to lend more momentum and credence to Android — if it were true. A U.K.-based gadget blog today said its all hogwash, however, citing a statement from Mio’s corporate parent, Mitac (and not just some other blog); Mitac’s original MiBuddy-related press release further clarifies things.
Your Friendly Neighborhood GPS Maniac Catches up on the LG Chocolate, Nuvifone, and Mio Moov
Duties over at one of the Maniac’s sister publications — helping shepherd a server migration, new content management system, etc. — have kept me busy as of late, as I’ve mentioned previously. Not to mention the fact that I’ve been trying to dodge the rain to test out a new GPS gadget (which I’ll get to later in another post). So I’ve spent this afternoon pouring over what I missed while I was otherwise occupied, and now have keyboard in hand to hit the highlights: a forthcoming whiz-bang smartphone from LG, Garmin’s Nuvifone finally launches, and new units from Mitac’s Mio four our European friends.
Mio Bringing out GPS Netbooks, DTV Sat Navs
Mio Technology has luanched a series of new GPS gadgets at the Computex show in Taiwan this week. Among them are: the Moov V500 and V700 range of portable navigation devices (PNDs) — or sat navs, if you will — featuring built-in digital TV tuners, the Explora K75 and K70 GPS-enabled phones, and a series of GPS-enabled netbooks dubbed Lightpad.
New Mios? Yep! Mitac Debuts New Moov SatNavs for the U.S., Navman Spirit with DTV for Europe
Mitac has put the naysayers in their place, apparently, as new Mio-branded Moov portable navigation devices (PNDs) are hitting store shelves in June, the company says. There has been scuttlebutt that Mitac would shelve its Mio brand in the United States after acquiring Magellan, but it seems like it is going to keep Mio around, at least as budget option for consumers. While the Moov S401 and S501 were rumored (courtesy of Engadget, props) to be on the way, Mitac/Mio made it official today.
