Garmin: Android-Based Nuvifone Coming in 2010

Will Android help Garmin navigate to more Nuvifone sales? A lot of people, including me, wonder about Garmin’s strategy for the Nuvifone. Why not create an app for the various popular platforms already out there – it’s not like it doesn’t already have the software expertise. Furthermore, if the company is going to insist on producing its own Garmin-branded handset, why use a proprietary OS when there are already established platforms out there, like, say, Android? Hold the … wait for it … phone – sorry, just had to say it – Garmin said during its recent quarterly earnings announcement that it was going to do just that.

The Long Awaited Garmin Nuvifone Arrives in the United States on AT&T, Costs a Cool $299

The Garmin Nuvifone G60 (heavy metal umlauts sold separately)It’s been literally years in the making — it was first announced by Garmin in January 2008 — but the Nuvifone is finally coming to America following its Asian debut earlier this summer. Not to mention the fact that I’ve been trying to dodge the rain to test out a new GPS gadget (which I’ll get to later in another post). So I’ve spent this afternoon pouring over what I missed while I was otherwise occupied, and now have keyboard in hand to hit the highlights: a forthcoming whiz-bang smartphone  from LG, Garmin’s Nuvifone finally launches, and new units from Mitac’s Mio four our European friends.

New Garmin Oregon Units Arrive, Nuvifones Don’t

Garmin Oregon 550tThis week you can lay your hands on two additional units in Garmin’s whiz-bang Oregon line of handheld devices — but if you’re hankering for a Nuvifone, well, you’ll just have to keep waiting a wee bit longer. But then it’s only been a year-and-a-half since Garmin first made the announcement after all. So what’s new in the Garmin Oregon 550 and 550t that the other Oregons don’t have? They are rocking a three-axis, tilt compensated electronic compass and a 3.2 megapixel digital camera.
